JFK airport on its way to solar energy
This month, the New York State Public Service Commission gave the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey permission to implement solar power projects at JFK International Airport. The Port Authority, together with New York Power Authority, will establish on-site solar facilities which, beyond servicing JFK, will also provide electricity at reduced rates to surrounding communities – with priority given to low-income communities. The project is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 4,374 tonnes per year and will “help the Port Authority to meet its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets of 35% by 2025 and long-term reduction goal of 80% by 2050.”
